Technology Growing at Atrium Health Floyd

Floyd Medical Center Records 500th Robotic Surgery

ROME, GA., April 28, 2022 – Atrium Health Floyd's commitment to offer robotic surgery to local patients is being well-received. Floyd Medical Center recently performed its 500th surgery using the da Vinci Xi Surgical System.

The hospital's first robot-assisted surgery using the da Vinci Xi Surgical System took place in November 2020. A second da Vinci device was added in in late 2021. Also, In December 2022, the hospital recorded its first robot-assisted knee replacement surgery, continuing Atrium Health Floyd's pledge to be the leader in the use of technology to provide the best care available.

The da Vinci technology is ideal for many surgeries because it enhances the surgeon's ability to make small incisions in very tight confines. It is widely used in gynecological, urological, thoracic and general surgeries.

The surgeon is 100 percent in control, using a console to allow precise movements of tiny instruments. The Xi System's immersive 3D-HD vision system provides surgeons a highly magnified view, virtually extending their eyes and hands into the patient.

The DePuy Synthes VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution is used for total knee replacement surgery. The VELYS technology assists the surgeon in ensuring the knee implant fits perfectly to give patients the best overall experience.

"We are continuing to explore more options using robot-assisted surgery," said Dr. Kenneth Jones, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Atrium Health Floyd. "It is evident that surgeons and patients alike see the value in the technology."
