OB-GYN Sees Women at Atrium Health Floyd Northwest Georgia Medical Clinic

Listening, Patient Autonomy are Important to Dr. Victoria Custer.

ROME, Ga., Dec. 4, 2023 – The newest OB-GYN at Atrium Health Floyd Northwest Georgia Medical ClinicDr. Victoria Custer, always wanted to return to Rome, Georgia. She grew up in Rockdale and Decatur counties in Georgia and came to Floyd County as a medical student. “I did all my clinical rotations here when I was a medical student, and I just fell in love with the place and the specialty."

She states that when she first came to Rome as a student at the Medical College of Georgia, she thought she wanted to practice in other specialties. But the surgeons at Northwest Georgia Medical Clinic knew better.

“Dr. Dixon Freeman told me I would be an OB-GYN after I saw my first C-section," she says, “and I didn't believe him at first." But after two years in Rome, she proved them right, and she set off to complete her residency in obstetrics and gynecology in Phoenix, Arizona. When she left Georgia, she put a sticky note with her name on it on an empty office door at Northwest Georgia Medical Clinic and promised to return.

A core principle for her is patient autonomy. “I want to try to be someone who will sit down and listen first. Patient autonomy and ownership of their health care matters to me," she said.

Custer is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Physicians. She served as education chief during her residency at Creighton University School of Medicine in Phoenix, Arizona, and won an award for her research that explored the difficulties in providing education in more rural settings like Rome.

Her clinical interests include gynecologic surgery, pregnancy complications, sexual health and treating women throughout their lifespan, with special interests in both menopause and adolescent gynecology.

In her free time, Custer enjoys reading, hiking, meal prepping and exploring Floyd County with her fiancé, Dr. Seth Einterz.

Custer sees patients Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Atrium Health Floyd Northwest Georgia Medical Clinic, 15 Riverbend Drive, SW in Rome.
