What is partial hospitalization for mental health?
Partial hospitalization is a treatment for people who don’t need full-time in-hospital care but would benefit from more intensive treatment than standard outpatient options. The main difference between outpatient treatment and partial hospitalization is the number of hours people spend at the treatment facility.
What happens in partial hospitalization?
In a partial hospitalization program, patients typically receive treatment for four or more hours at a time, five days per week. Usually, partial hospitalization programs last around six to eight weeks.
Partial hospitalization may be right for people who are:
- In an outpatient program but need more intensive counseling to prevent hospitalization
- Transitioning out of inpatient care
Partial hospitalization is also known as intensive outpatient treatment. It primarily involves group therapy but may also include individual and family sessions as needed.
