Men’s health screening guidelines

Find a doctor

Good health at every age requires regular checkups, conversations with your Atrium Health Floyd and Harbin Clinic provider plus routine screenings.

Screenings for men ages 18-39

  • Diabetes screening: If you have a body mass index (BMI) greater than 25 and other risk factors for diabetes, you should be screened.
  • Infectious disease screening: Depending on your lifestyle factors and medical history, you may need to be screened for sexually transmitted infections such as syphilis, chlamydia and HIV.
  • Immunizations: We recommend vaccines for influenza (annually), tetanus (every 10 years) and measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) if you didn’t receive the MMR vaccine as a child.

Screenings for men ages 40-64

Colorectal cancer screening: You should be screened for colorectal cancer beginning at age 45, or earlier if you have a family history.  Learn what you need to know about getting a colonoscopy.

  • Diabetes screening: After age 45, you should be screened for diabetes every three years. If you are overweight or have other risk factors, you may need more frequent screenings.
  • Prostate cancer screening: After age 50, you should discuss screening for prostate cancer with your provider.
  • Immunizations: You should continue getting a flu vaccine yearly and a tetanus shot every 10 years.

Screenings for men ages 65 & older

  • Colorectal cancer screening: Until age 75, you should have an annual stool test, a flexible sigmoidoscopy every five to 10 years, or a colonoscopy every 10 years.
  • Diabetes screening: You should continue diabetes screening every three years or as necessary due to risk factors.
  • Prostate cancer screening: You should discuss screening for prostate cancer with your provider.
  • Immunizations: You should receive vaccines for shingles and pneumonia in addition to an annual flu shot and tetanus shot every 10 years.
