High School Academic Internships

Atrium Health Floyd + Harbin Clinic Academic Intern Partnership

High School students come to Atrium Health Floyd (AHF) or Harbin Clinic (HC) through their College and Career Academies (CCA), and Career, Technical and Agriculture Education (CTAE) school's health sciences programs.

Atrium Health Floyd + Harbin Clinic’s Academic Internship Program partners with our area high schools to achieve their healthcare teaching goals. Atrium+ Harbin recognizes that these students are our future workforce.

Each student who is accepted into the Academic Internship Program is assigned to a placement that aligns as closely as possible to the student’s academic and career goals.

Atrium Health Floyd Hospital + Harbin Clinic Placement Requirements

Due to the limited number of spaces available, student placements are prioritized in the order students complete their ACEMAPP application process. No placement will be assigned until ALL requirements are met in ACEMAPP by the deadline. It is highly recommended students work with their educator to list three areas of interest in order of preference. The educator then makes the placement selection on the student's behalf which is then reviewed for availability and approved at the discretion of Atrium and Harbin. Students must be 16 years old to intern, and 18 years old to intern in surgical services.

ACEMAPP Student Application Requirement Cutoff Dates

Fall semester: Last day of class prior to summer break

Spring semester: Last day of class prior to winter/holiday break

The number of intern slots is limited each semester. The morning shifts have the most activity on the floors, particularly around surgical support services. The units are typically quieter with less activity in the afternoon.

Our goal is to unite with our Health Sciences educators and students to build our community workforce and keep Atrium Health Floyd and Harbin Clinic strong!

Our role as an integral part of the high school internship experience is to provide mentors who give guidance and encouragement to the student as well as being involved in the teaching of work tasks and job responsibilities to the student. Many individuals may be involved in mentoring a student, or a single person may take on the entire responsibility depending on the unit's patient load and staffing capacity.
